Review and Giveaway: Bill Harley and Keith Munslow's "It's Not Fair to Me!"

I bet these two had a blast making this CD.  You can hear it in every song. You can also tell that these grown men remember exactly what it was like to be a child; each track in this collaborative album expertly captures the childhood experience.

When the title track, "It's Not Fair to Me," began playing the first time I had a temporary worry that maybe this song would be ammunition to fuel rivalry between the boys.  I was wrong.  The two of them analyzed the song line by line pinpointing the whininess and how the events had nothing to do with fault, but often human error of the one complaining.  They were unfazed by the accusations and laughed with the message at the end where they come together in their commiseration: "we're all bozos on this bus ... it's not fair to us." It was a really positive experience and ever subsequent playing of the song resulted in further insights the boys would offer.  I was amazed.

Blue's favourite song was "Stinkeye" asking me to replay it repeatedly. Was he memorizing how to do it or was he mesmerized with the idea that a look can have magical properties?  We may never know.  My favourite was easily "My Eraser," I loved the metaphor it created with the vehicle of gospel music describing how the eraser helps him fix his mistakes.  (Red thought it funny when they tried to say the capital of Texas was France before the eraser stepped in and gave him a second chance.)  The rest of the album is great, too: the sleepy doo-wop of "Swimming", the inspiring "He Got Up Again" and the hilarious "Hideous Sweater."  My boys may not remember that this CD was created by expert musicians Bill Harley and Keith Munslow, they call them the "fighting brothers," but the lessons that they learn from the bickering include forgiveness and a sense of humour.  As it turns out I emjoyed the repeated listenings of this album, and I happen to think it gave my own children some perspective regarding their personal woes.
